Akron in Action

Welcome to Akron in Action: A Ford NGL Community Experience.  This three-day event is designed to demonstrate how Akron Public Schools mobilized the entire Akron community to build and sustain the College & Career Academies of Akron.  Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the opportunities and challenges of being a mid-size urban district in the early phases of academy implementation

  • See the high school and middle school academies in action through school and nonprofit partner tours

  • Interact with students, teachers, academy principals, academy coaches and business partners to learn about the important foundations of CCAA

  • Understand how Akron Public Schools is designing a PreK-12 academy model to ensure a high level of student success

  • Customize your experience on day 3 by attending breakout sessions relevant to your interests and district

The 3-day schedule includes:

September 27, 2022 - Welcome Session and Reception

  • Doors open @ 5:00 pm

  • Opening Session @ 5:30 pm

  • Reception and Networking @ 6:30 pm

September 28, 2022 - Action-packed site visits to our academies. Team debriefs will conclude the day.

  • Breakfast and Opening Remarks @ 8:00 am

  • School and Nonprofit Visits Begin @ 8:45 am

  • Team Debriefs @ 3:30

  • Ford NGL Communities Offsite - Invite Only @ 6:00 - 7:30 pm (Information and registration link from Ford NGL will be available in late August.  Email Amy Lozen [email protected] with questions.)

September 29, 2022 - Personalized schedule of breakout sessions** covering a wide variety of of College & Career Academy topics.

  • Breakfast and Opening Session @ 8:00 am

  • Optional team time facilitated by APS and experts @ 1:15 pm

  • Bus transportation to Akron/Canton (CAK) and Cleveland (CLE) airports @ 3:00 pm


**Over 25 sessions topics including:  

  • Creating a team of invested community members to envision, plan, and implement your master plan
  • Designing and implementing hands-on experiences and inquiry-based learning at the high, middle and elementary  school levels
  • Attracting and integrating business partners in the academy model
  • Preparing and engaging teachers, effective teams and school leadership
  • Educating and engaging families
  • Deepening student leadership and accountability
  • Creating access for students with exceptionalities
  • Creating opportunities for college credit and industry credentials
  • Providing oversight to the academy model for successful transformations 


The cost is $750 per attendee and includes the following:  

  • All event and program materials

  • Heavy hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic drinks at Tuesday’s opening session (Optional cash bar)

  • Continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments on Wednesday

  • Continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments on Thursday

  • Transportation to and from all event activities (Event transportation will be provided to and from the Blu-tique Hotel, Hilton Akron/Fairlawn, Hilton Garden Inn E. Market, Marriott Courtyard Akron, and the APS Administration Building. If you select a different hotel or are not staying at a hotel, you will be responsible for getting to the APS Administration Building each day to board the busses to the events.)

Air travel, hotel reservations and transportation from/to* the airport are the responsibility of our guests.
