Sister Universities/Colleges

Akron Public Schools has established an unprecedented program, following the “Sister City” doctrine founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. The idea of a “Sister City” is well-established in the public eye and has an immediate positive perception that comes along with the idea of sharing ideas and best practices.

The concept of sister universities/colleges allows for the full integration and partnership of post-secondary institutions into our Akron Public Schools. The sister university/college partnership uses the strengths of the post-secondary institution to focus on curriculum, project-based learning experiences and support for college access. These partnerships will help to bring support and resources to APS students and help them navigate choices in both colleges and careers.

Kent State University

Stark State College

Stark State College focuses on quality, affordable higher education that propels students to success in careers that are in demand or launches them toward advanced degrees.

Stark State offers more than 230 associate degrees and certificates in business, education, engineering technologies, health, human and public services, information technology, liberal arts, mathematics and sciences. The College also works with business and industry to train a skilled workforce to meet talent pipeline needs.

More than 30 percent of Stark State’s 14,000-plus enrollment are from Akron, and many of them attend Stark State Akron, a new three-story facility on Perkins Street.

The University of Mount Union

The mission of the University of Mount Union is to prepare students for fulfilling lives, meaningful work, and responsible citizenship.

We provide over 2,100 students a wide range of educational options- including 56 majors and over 70 minors. We also offer a variety of master’s programs and a doctoral program for graduate students.
