AKRON, Ohio (December 9, 2020) - Today, Akron Public Schools (APS), The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and United Way of Summit & Medina are pleased to announce that Goodyear will become a named integrated partner in the College & Career Academies of Akron at both Ellet CLC and NIHF STEM High School.   Goodyear will offer instructional support and real-world learning opportunities in areas of technology, engineering and more.  The academies will be named Goodyear Academy of Applied Engineering and Goodyear Academy of Advanced Technology and Design, at  Ellet CLC and NIHF STEM High School, respectively.

“Goodyear is a pillar in the City of Akron and a longtime supporter of Akron Public Schools,” said Superintendent David W. James, Ed.D.  “The strength of this partnership will demonstrate to students the professional and academic skills needed to be successful in life, and the collaborative spirit and sense of community to be successful in Akron.”

“The future success of both communities and companies starts with investment in students, today,” said Laura Duda, Goodyear’s senior vice president and Chief Communications Officer.  “That’s why we are committed to helping APS students reach their full potential and prepare for future careers, hopefully many of them with Goodyear.  We look forward to engaging with students at Ellet and NIHF STEM high schools through experiential outings, classroom activities, job shadowing and much more.”

“We look forward to welcoming Goodyear to the Ellet family,” said Michelle Marquess-Kearns, principal of Ellet CLC.  “We know their time, talent and expertise will provide our students with relevant, real world experiences. ‘Learning by doing’ engages students and helps them maximize their potential.”

Dina Popa, principal of NIHF STEM high school added, “We are truly blessed by this amazing partnership between Goodyear and STEM High School.  We look forward to our continued work with the company and their valuable associates which will provide innovative educational experiences and opportunities as we educate our future leaders.”

The collaboration between Akron Public Schools and Goodyear was formed with the help of United Way of Summit & Medina.   United Way serves as a link between the College & Career Academies of Akron and local businesses to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students and to strengthen the education to employment pipeline in Summit County.

“Real-world learning opportunities and hands-on experiences make a difference in the lives of students,” said Jim Mullen, president and CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina.  “We are proud to work with Goodyear, a company that truly cares about its community, to create these opportunities to inspire kids to pursue their passions, develop their skills and discover new ways to improve the world around them and reach their true potential.”

APS was designated a Ford Next Generation Learning Community in May 2017.  Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, is supporting the transformation of public high schools into career-themed academies to better prepare students for college and professional success in today's competitive global economy.   College and Career Academies of Akron are supported by the following key strategic partners:  GAR Foundation, United Way of Summit & Medina, ConxusNEO, Summit Education Initiative, and Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce.
