Gear Up

Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs

The mission of Akron Public Schools is to prepare each child for success. No matter which “E” is chosen upon graduation: to Enroll in higher education, Enlist in the armed services, or become Employed in a full-time career or as an Entrepreneur, College and Career Academies of Akron is committed to helping each student succeed. Aim High Akron GEAR UP is a partnership between Akron Public Schools, Project GRAD Akron and area colleges and universities. Building on the work of the College & Career Academies, this federally funded program is designed to provide an extra layer of support for middle and high schools whose students are enrolling in higher education at a lower rate than their peers. Beginning with a cohort of students currently enrolled in grade 6 and 7 and following them for 7 years, GEAR UP staff and advisors will work with students and families in the Buchtel, East, Kenmore-Garfield, and North clusters to provide:

  • Intentional, embedded college readiness programs
  • Enhanced academic supports such as homework help and tutoring
  • Summer college visits
  • Enhanced career exposure, especially in underrepresented fields such as STEM
  • Family activities to raise awareness of the college access process
