JROTC

Akron Public Schools is the only school district in Ohio that offers all four branches of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC).

JROTC is a leadership development program based on the values and practices of the United States military's four branches. It aims to motivate young people to be better citizens and prepare them for leadership roles. The program combines classroom experiences with service to students' schools and communities and teaches students the values of leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline.

The program supplies uniforms, books, and all other equipment used in the course, free of charge.

JROTC instructors are retired military professionals certified by the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. APS JROTC programs and staff are as follows:

  • Buchtel CLC Air Force with Lieutenant Colonel Lauri Arelanno
  • East CLC Marines with Master Sergeant John MacLean
  • Ellet CLC Navy with First Class Petty Officer Joseph Grieco and Colonel Lionel Urquhart
  • Garfield CLC Army with Major John Jacob and Sergeant First Class Eric Rouse
In addition to professional and personal development, participation in a JROTC program can support students' pathway to graduation. Students can earn the Military Enlistment Seal by participating in JROTC programs. Cadets who complete at least two years of JROTC may be entitled to advancement if they enlist into the services. However, JROTC does not obligate any student to enter the military at any level.
Students and families should see their school counselor or JROTC Instructors for more information or to participate.
