AKRON, Ohio (November 30, 2021) – Akron Public Schools (APS) announced yesterday a three-year renewal of the partner agreement between Summa Health and Buchtel Community Learning Center (CLC).  Through the partnership, Summa Health will continue to offer instructional support and real-world learning opportunities for students in the Summa Health Academy of Leadership and Innovation.

“Summa Health has long been a good friend to the Akron Public Schools,” said APS Superintendent Christine Fowler Mack.  “Since becoming a named academy partner, Summa Health has given over 3,000 hours of time and talent to the students and teachers at Buchtel CLC.  From the mini medical school to lowering the age requirement for employment, Summa Health’s efforts have proven to be essential to the work that we do.”

“At Summa Health, we are inspired every day by young people in our community who are eager to learn about healthcare,” said Cliff Deveny, M.D., Summa Health president and CEO. “Through our renewed partnership with Akron Public Schools we continue to offer opportunities for students such as the community health worker internship and mentorship programs.”

The collaboration between Akron Public Schools and Summa Health was formed with the help of United Way of Summit & Medina.  United Way serves as a link between the College and Career Academies of Akron and local businesses to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students and to strengthen the education to employment pipeline in Summit County.

“We are thankful to Summa Health for renewing their commitment to the students at Buchtel CLC,” said Jim Mullen, president and CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina. “Real-life experiences, like those Summa Health provides, inspire students to pursue their passions and build the foundations of rewarding careers.”

APS was designated a Ford Next Generation Learning Community in May 2017.  Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, is supporting the transformation of public high schools into career-themed academies to better prepare students for college and professional success in today's competitive global economy.   College & Career Academies of Akron are supported by the following key strategic partners:  GAR Foundation, United Way of Summit & Medina, ConxusNEO, Summit Education Initiative, and Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce.
