AKRON, Ohio (April 20, 2021) – Akron Public Schools (APS) announced yesterday a three-year, renewed partnership agreement between East Community Learning Center (CLC) and KeyBank.  KeyBank will continue to offer instructional support and real-world learning opportunities for students in the KeyBank Academy of Business and Health Services.

KeyBank became a named academy partner in 2018.  They led the creation of the Financial Services Lab, supported by a grant from the KeyBank Foundation, giving students access to real financial technology typically found in a banking center.  All students in the KeyBank Academy have been able to earn and manage KeyCash, a program designed to promote good grades, attendance, and positive behavior and citizenship.  Students use the Financial Services Lab to save their KeyCash to pay for purchases like tickets to football games or prom at a later date.

“KeyBank’s contributions to the academy at East CLC have given students the opportunity to make connections between their academic courses and the real world,”  said APS Superintendent David W. James, Ed.D.  “Their willingness to renew our partnership will give even more students the opportunity to learn necessary financial skills while exploring viable career pathways.”

KeyBank Academy Principal Sarah Kramer added, “The KeyBank Financial Services Lab has had a tremendous impact on students’ grades, financial literacy skills and the school culture at East CLC.  Our students have been able to explore various careers through experiential learning days, job shadowing and guest speakers.”

“We are excited to renew our partnership with Akron Public Schools and grateful to the administrators, faculty, students and staff for the success this program has achieved,” said Timothy Burke, KeyBank Northeast Ohio Market President. “We are proud to support this community and thrilled that more students will be able to participate in this program that provides them with valuable life lessons and skills.”

The collaboration between Akron Public Schools and KeyBank was formed with the help of United Way of Summit & Medina.  United Way serves as a link between the College and Career Academies of Akron and local businesses to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students and to strengthen the education to employment pipeline in Summit County.

“We are incredibly grateful to KeyBank for their continued investment in the future of our community,” said Jim Mullen, president and CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina. “When students have access to hands-on learning opportunities and career-relevant knowledge, that translates to better jobs, more rewarding careers and more stable families.”

APS was designated a Ford Next Generation Learning Community in May 2017.  Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, is supporting the transformation of public high schools into career-themed academies to better prepare students for college and professional success in today's competitive global economy.   College and Career Academies of Akron are supported by the following key strategic partners:  GAR Foundation, United Way of Summit & Medina, ConxusNEO, Summit Education Initiative, and Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce.
